Some things never change. Ryan Giggs, one of the most well-known names in world football, who has made it a habit of winning, won the inaugural Premier Futsal tournament. A tournament that grabbed major headlines across the world for signing some of the biggest names will forever be remembered for Ronaldinho’s massive performance against Scholes’ Bengaluru with five goals. However, Ronadinho had to return home and the final became a battle of two veterans who have been there and done that – Ryan Giggs and Michel Salgado.

The two have clashed during their club football days. Mumbai became the match well with Giggs’ team with more firepower with Foglia and Angellot, who have lit up the tournament so far including the desi lad Chanpreet whose proud parents couldn’t contain their excitement over the fact he was playing with Ryan Giggs.

Kochi who chalked up a super comeback in the dramatic draw against Chennai, coming back from 3 down were ahead early when Kochi scored the first goal within two minutes. Chaguinha’s shot/pass found its way to Moraes at the far post who put it away with ease. Kochi spent the match counter attacking and Salgado, though he made it 2-0 when he hit the back of the net from a long-range free kick only to learn that it was an indirect free kick.

Angellot came close several times once flooring half the Kochi defence with a drag back but his shot was deflected.

Despite coming close several times, Mumbai looked like they were going to lose before Angellot finally got the goal that eluded him throughout the match with a late volley. The penalty shootout (in which players are allowed to dribble as well) started off with some misses (reminiscent of that Germany v/s Italy shootout from the Euro 2016 tournament). Both Giggs and Salgado had chances to finish it off, but while Giggs hit keeper, Salgado cleared his like he was aiming for the stars.

In the end, it came down to the keepers and Mumbai’s legendary keeper Amado scored his shot brilliantly before his opposite number fired wide.

All in all, this was a brilliant tournament, with a dramatic finish. No matter where Giggs goes now, no matter who he manages, he will always have the distinction of being the winner of the inaugural Premier Futsal tournament. That medal sits pretty with the 13 Premier League, 4 FA Cup and 2 UEFA Champions League winners’ medals!
