Kanishka breezes into pre-quarterfinals of tennis meet

Kanishka crushed Tamil Nadu's G S Vasavi without dropping a single game, while sixth seed Vasanti defeated Andhra Pradesh's S Mansi Reddy 6-3 6-1.

 Prominent local players Indra Patwardhan, Jayesh Pungaliya, Kanishka Chawla and Vasanti Shinde scored fluent wins to enter the singles pre-quarter finals of the Walchand Cup U-16 National Series junior tennis tournament here today.

On a day when no major upset was recorded, sixth seed Indra eased past Nihit Rawal of Chhattisgarh 6-3 6-4, while unseeded Jayesh made short work of West Bengal's Ishan Eqbal 6-2 6-4 in the boys second round matches at Deccan Gymkhana courts.

In the girls side, Kanishka crushed Tamil Nadu's G S Vasavi without dropping a single game, while sixth seed Vasanti defeated Andhra Pradesh's S Mansi Reddy 6-3 6-1.

Andhra qualifier Amreen Naaz continued her dream run in the tournament as she made it to the pre-quarterfinals at the expense of statemate R Niharika. She won a well-fought first set tie-breaker, before winning the second set 6-4.
