This close-up video by NASA’s Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) shows an active region on the sun which erupted with at least a dozen minor events.

These eruptions happened for more than 30 hours from November 3rd to 5th, 2015.

These observations were made near the right-hand edge of the sun’s disk.

As competing magnetic forces grappled with each other, tongues of solar material lashed out from the sun’s surface and several small flares erupted.

The small flares are seen as white flashes in this extreme ultraviolet wavelength of 304 angstroms.

Though the sun’s extreme ultraviolet light is invisible to our eyes, the wavelength is colourised here in red.

The Solar Dynamics Observatory is the first mission to be launched for NASA's Living With a Star (LWS) Program, a program designed to understand the causes of solar variability and its impacts on Earth.
