BJP leader Lalji Tandon, who won prestigious Lucknow parliamentary seat in recent elections, on Tuesday resigned from the membership of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly.

"I have submitted my resignation as the member of the state assembly to Vidhan Sabha speaker Sukhdeo Rajbhar this morning," Tandon said here.

The leader was elected to the Vidhan Sabha from Lucknow (west) seat in 2007 Assembly elections. He contested parliamentary elections after former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, who represented the constituency, opted out of electoral politics.

Meanwhile, BSP has announced candidature of Neeraj Bora from Lucknow (west) seat.

Bora contested last assembly election from the same seat as BSP nominee, but lost to Tandon.

BJP, however, said that it was shortlisting a suitable candidate for the seat, which had been a stronghold of the party.

"The party had never lost this seat in last several assembly elections. We are looking for a strong contender, who can maintain the party's winning streak from Lucknow (west)," a senior BJP leader said.
