The 108 emergency response services in the state are looking at an enhancement of facilities in the near future. In addition to a network of emergency trauma centres in the state, the services will be equipped with facilities of recording a person’s vitals, blood group and will have cardiogram machines.

With World Health Day 2009 being celebrated worldwide on the theme of ‘health facilities in emergencies’, Gujarat has taken a unique and proactive initiative in enhancing its emergency medical services. The state-run 108 emergency services have proven to be boon in interior and remote areas of Gujarat, especially in the case of pregnancy-related situations.

Now, with the state government planning to create a network of trauma centres in order to provide medical treatment within an hour of crisis, the 108 services will see an additional upgrade.

“The 108 emergency response services will be provided with more facilities, even as the state government develops a network of trauma centres in the state to provide optimum emergency medical care. The 108 ambulances will soon be equipped with instruments to test the vitals of patients and will have cardiogram machines,” state health minister Jaynarayan Vyas said.

Confirming the development, Dr Ashendu Pandey, senior partner and emergency response cell physician of EMRI, said, “We have been running a pilot project of cardiogram facilities in 100 ambulances since the past four months. On the basis of the results, we will extend the facilities to every ambulance.”

He further said that the technicians in the 108 ambulances take out a cardiogram and send the same to the control room and hospital to which the patient was being taken. “We use Bluetooth mobile technology for this and any Windows-based mobile phone can read the cardiogram. In case of a heart attack, a doctor can immediately guide the technicians as to what to do. By the time the ambulance reaches the hospital, treatment will have begun, and the doctor at the hospital will be ready for the next step in treatment,” he said.
