Theatre actor and producer, Reema Lagoo is hoping that her current stage production Tula Mi Mala Mi will attain the tag of a trend-setter in Marathi theatre, given the fact that she is experimenting with techniques that have been seen never before on the stage. There will not only be a live performance by Lagoo herself, but she will be playing double roles with the aid of technology.

On one hand while Lagoo performs live for one character on the stage, she plays the other character on a visual screen that has been set up as the backdrop to the play. So while she shot for one performance on the camera, she will be playing the other one on the stage. Lagoo says, “It may sound very easy to do, but the crux of the play depends on the timing of both the characters. Both the characters have to match their eye movement, body movement, and speech.”

Lagoo has an interesting take behind her decision to produce the show. She says, “A concept like this is new to Marathi theatre. It is definitely a risk to try to experiment on these lines, so I volunteered to produce it. While watching it myself, I did not compare with the idea I had on mind, but looked into the several criterion of how to fit it into a Marathi production.”

Talking about why she wanted to produce and act in a yet again-translated play, she says, “The entire concept of this dual medium on the stage is novel for Marathi theatre — a first of its kind. While we have kept the original storyline intact, writer Vivek Lagoo has turned the original script into something more lucid and colloquial for the audience to understand.”

Interestingly, for its inaugural show, Logoo was invited to Paris to stage her play in front of a 600-member audience comprising NRIs and a handful of foreigners. Naturally, Reema is excited about the Indian-leg, “I have had countless invitations to take the play abroad, but for the time being, I want to concentrate on popularising the concept in India.”

Tula Mi Mala Mi will be staged on Thursday at Yashwant Chavan, Matunga.
