In what could perhaps be the single biggest instance of fragging — uniformed personnel killing colleagues — in the country, a rifleman of the Assam Rifles posted in Manipur's Ukhrul district allegedly opened indiscriminate fire at his colleagues, killing a Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) and five other jawans.

Security forces have launched a massive hunt to nab Rifleman TS Tangkhul who allegedly opened fire after a brawl with his colleagues at the 17 Assam Rifles' post under Chingai police station on Wednesday evening, official sources said.

Unconfirmed reports said two Assam Rifles contingents mistook each other as militants and clashed during which the six were killed.

A court of inquiry has been ordered into the incident.

Assam Rifles spokesman Major Shamser Jung said that according to a preliminary report there was a verbal altercation between the rifleman and his JCO at their permanent vehicle check post at Awang Khullen in the district around 4.30 pm on Wednesday.

"The trooper had an argument with a Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) and suddenly he picked up his service weapon (an assault rifle) and started firing indiscriminately, killing the officer on the spot," Jung said.

The irate trooper then went berserk and started firing on other colleagues who came out from their barracks hearing gunshots.

"The trooper sprayed bullets on a group of other colleagues, killing five more before fleeing the area with the weapon. We don't really know what led to this or what the reasons were for the verbal argument," the official said.

"Efforts are on to nab him, but the trooper is still at large after he fled the camp with his assault rifle late on Wednesday," said Major Jung.

The Assam Rifles is a paramilitary force currently engaged in counter insurgency operations in Manipur.
