SINGAPORE: It was a gathering of stars from both, Formula One and Bollywood. Former World champions Nicky Lauda, Damon Hill, Mika Hakkinen and actress Shilpa Shetty formed a part of the star brigade at the dazzling Singapore night Grand Prix on Sunday.

However, more than the presence of stars, it was the quality of race against the glittering backdrop - superbly lit Singapore track, towering sky scrapers, magnificent heritage buildings and the giant-wheel - that won the fans’ applause.

Singapore was buzzing with activity right from Sunday morning, in anticipation of the historic event in the small country. Tens of thousands of Singaporeans packed the stand in what was one of the biggest and the most glamorous sporting event here.

Majority of the first timers were stunned to hear the deafening sound of a Formula One car. Though they struggled to cope up with this ear-hurting sound initially, the fans loved every second of the race. Since a majority of the fans were die-hard Ferrari supporters, there was a hushed silence in the stands after Felipe Massa’s disastrous pit stop. Their agony was doubled after Raikkonen crashed during the end of the race.

Compared to the red brigade, McLaren fans were few and far between and were scattered all along the circuit. Though it was hard to believe that Fernando Alonso, who started 15th on the grid, had won the race, almost everyone in the stand gave a rousing reception to the Spanish driver following his victory.

Though neither Massa nor Hamilton finished on top, a majority of fans were happy that the championship was alive and kicking. There was also a feeling of satisfaction that the Singapore GP had passed off without the intervention of factors such as weather, the bumpy nature of circuit, and the lighting system.

It was almost a miracle that it didn’t rain for the last three days, as the city receives rainfall almost throughout the year. All in all, the quality of the race was a perfect complement to the spectacle that the Singapore GP was.
