JAIPUR: Ready to kick-off their election campaign with the visit of AICC chairperson Sonia Gandhi to Bikaner and Devili on Monday, the farmer leaders of state Congress are working hard to make the event a big success.

With the Congress chief expected to elaborate on the farmer welfare schemes, including the huge loan waiver by the UPA government for small and marginal farmers, these leaders are toiling hard to mobilise the farmers to ensure a mammoth gathering at Devili.
Party insiders said local leaders have been asked to ensure the presence of maximum number of small and marginal farmers from the surrounding districts of the newly-formed constituency which has a population mix of various sections of the society.

Apart from giving a boost to the party, the success of the rally is likely to boost the chances of some candidates, who are banking on the support and recommendations of the local farmer leaders.

“The rally aims at covering four districts of — Tonk, Bundi, Ajmer and Bhilwara and hopes to mobilise locals in favour of the Congress by highlighting the party’s initiatives for farmers,” said a partyman.

After inaugurating the project at Bikaner, the AICC chief will address the gathering at Devili, focussing mainly on NREGA  and the farming schemes, said a senior party leader.

Several state leaders have already toured the areas to gauge the mood of locals besides ensuring that the campaign takes off on a high note.  “We are expecting a gathering of around two lakh supporters from the constituency,” said a senior leader involved with the  preparations.

The Congress chief is likely to be accompanied by some other members from the screening committee and  the AICC observers besides state leaders, including PCC president CP Joshi and former chief minister Ashok Gehlot.
