Dissatisfaction over the meagre salary and no respect in Pakistan are what drove Karimullah Khan Osan Khan back to Mumbai, where he was allegedly instrumental in the 1993 serial blasts. According to the statement given by Karimullah to the crime branch, Dawood Ibrahim was paying him a paltry sum of Rs10,000 per month to take care of himself and his family.

One of his interrogators said after 1993 blasts, Khan went to Dubai, where he stayed for two years and was the flushed out by the government. He then went to Karachi to join top D-gang members Dawood and Anees, where he was given a rented accommodation to stay with his family.

“He was working as a watchman for Anees and was allegedly assaulted by Dawood’s brother Noora on several occasions. He was seeking an opportunity to leave Pakistan. He first sent his family to India and later fled Pakistan without informing anyone,” said a police officer.

Khan told the crime branch sleuths that Dawood had suitably rewarded those who helped him in executing the serial blasts; however, he was not so lucky. “Khan said Dawood had gifted supermarkets, plots and employment to those who helped him in the blasts. But since he (Khan) was with the Ejaz Pathan faction of the company, he was not given the same treatment,” said an officer. He added that Pathan had parted ways with Dawood some time after the blasts.

As per some of Khan’s statements, Tiger Memon, one of the masterminds of the blasts, was a real estate tycoon in Karachi and had his projects in Karachi and Islamabad. Anees, Noora and Shakeel were also into real estate business in Pakistan.

Khan rubbished the claims that a rift had developed between Chhota Shakeel and Anees. “Khan said Shakeel is as close to Dawood as Anees is and they operate together. While all of them are involved in criminal activities as well as into the real estate business, Dawood controls the empire. He has invested a lot of money in shares in Pakistan,” said additional commissioner of police (crime), Deven Bharti.

Khan also told the police that Dawood was holed up in Karachi and rarely moved out.
“The last time Dawood moved out of Pakistan was in 2005 to attend the marriage of Anees’s daughter in Dubai,” said Bharti.

Dawood’s residence in Karachi, which is spread over 2 acres, is guarded by ex-army men. Most of his visitors are top Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) officials and VVIP persons. Only Dawood and Anees are being provided with ISI security. Not everyone is allowed to meet the don, Khan told the police.
