BANGALORE: The Bangalore and Mumbai police are keeping a watchful eye in the Karnataka capital on the premises of Campbell White, a purported IT training company, as well as Door Christian Centre with which escaped US citizen Kenneth Haywood was associated.
The fact that both Campbell and Door are located in the same four-storeyed building on the busy Wheeler Road in south Bangalore not only makes the surveillance job of the police easier but also strengthens the suspicion that the alleged IT company is a front for the radical Christian group.
A beefy American from Arizona who looks more like a possible pastor but less like an IT trainer and who in fact may be neither, Haywood is wanted by the Mumbai police for continued questioning in the investigation of last month's Ahmedabad blasts. Haywood is not charged but the police have been questioning him ever since it was found that terrorists had used his email shortly before the blasts. But he slipped away from India to the US on Sunday allegedly with some covert help from officials.
"A team from Mumbai has arrived to keep a watch on the company and we are providing local support," an official of Karnataka's anti-terrorist cell told DNA.
Meanwhile, in a quaint twist to the whole sordid drama, the company which claims to have branches in Chennai, Hyderabad, Mumbai and Trichy, has written to the Bangalore police requesting "protection" from the media which it said disturbed its daily activities. But just what these activities are is what the police are interested in finding out.
DNA reporters visited the company on the second floor of MS Plaza and the church on the third floor only to find both the places locked. But a call to the landline, supposedly of Campbell White, was answered by a "Jonathan" who called himself a "senior training module developer." Sounding cross in his American accent, he insisted on an email interaction and maintained that the managing director of the company Daniel Rubianes was the man to talk to.
But Rubianes — you guessed it — is a pastor of Doors Christian Church in Bangalore and he is out of town. His mobile number registered with ‘Just Dial’ service does not exist. The website of Doors Christian Church Centre of Australia lists Bangalore as its only Indian centre and "Daniel and Monica Rubianes" as its Indian representatives.
