HYDERABAD: Life came to a standstill in Hyderabad, capital of Andhra Pradesh, with the sky opening up for the last 24 hours. What began as normal showered Friday evening at about 5.30 pm continued through Saturday. The Met department has recorded the rainfall in Hyderabad and surrounding areas to be at about 18 cms till Saturday evening.

Normal life in the city has gone completely out of gear for the last 24 hours with every locality in the city witnessing water logging and power cuts. Business centres including Panjagutta, Abids, Secunderabad, Dilsukhnagar, Ameerpet and parts of the Old City have remained cut off from the other parts of the city.Roads leading to and from the city saw  traffic jams and stranded vehicles for one hour to over four hours. Lack of basic infrastructure like rain water drains for the city with over 70 lakh population was glaringly visible once again on the roads.

According to the government officials, there were 9 deaths in Hyderabad and surrounding areas due to various reasons: six deaths were caused by falling walls and roofs; one person died in the old city after a short circuit.

“We have set up camps in various locations of the state for relocating people from the low lying or flood affected areas. We are monitoring the situation through an exclusive control room,” relief and rehabilitation commissioner K Ratna Prabha said. Meanwhile, rains are expected to continue for the next 48 hours.

With the IT and ITeS companies logging off for the weekends, the roads saw a significant reduction in the traffic on the roads. “Had it happened on a week day, many IT and BPO outfits would have pressed the panic button,” said  T Srinivas, logistics head of BPO major, said. A total of 42 deaths have been reported in the state including atleast nine in Hyderabad. The state government has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 1 lakh to the kin of each of the dead.
