Mihika Basu reports on the hopes and fears of a new batch of students

It was a long and anxious day for 340-odd aspiring IITians and their parents at the first day of counselling at IIT Bombay. Unwilling to miss a chance of getting into an IIT, students reached the venue well before the process began at 9am.

Though Day 1 was only for counselling OBC and ST candidates, general category students, like Anand Seth, also came to get an “idea”. Seth and his father had come from Jaipur to talk to students who were attending Tuesday’s session. “I need guidance,” said Seth. “I want to know which subject I should choose.”

Seth was disappointed to see that counselling was being done in groups. “I feel there should be senior professors and students to guide new candidates,” said RK Seth, his father.

The total number of seats available in different categories across all IITs, IT-BHU, and Ismu-Dhanbad through JEE 2008 are 6,632 (source: JEE brochure).

While counselling ends on June 21 for all candidates, choices will be processed for course allocation and announced on June 30 on IIT websites.

Like Seth, Ankit Garg from Gwalior had come with his parents to talk to students though his counselling was slated for Wednesday. And it was not just great placements that he was looking for. “I want to become a scientist and aspire to join Nasa and Isro,” he said. “I’ve come here because IITs are an established brand and I want to be associated with them.”

While computer science, mechanical, electrical, and civil engineering were the preferred course options, IIT Bombay topped the list of institute options for many.

There were, of course, exceptions like Rashmi Kumari from Imphal, who wants to pursue textile engineering from IIT Delhi or Arvind Meena who wants to study at IIT Kanpur.

Besides general information and what new courses are available, IIT-B had put up information on the new IITs and detailed answers to several queries on IIT Gandhinagar, which it will mentor.
