Murdered British teenager’s 35-page diary obtained by Mayank Tewari reveals her unstable mind
PANJIM: Was Scarlette Keeling thinking death a few days before her body was found on Anjuna Beach? Was she sleeping with Julio, her Indian “boyfriend”, because he would supply her drugs and give her family money?
Scarlette’s personal diary, a copy of which is with DNA, reveals the British teen’s life a few months before she came to India and talks about her sadness and romantic confusion while she was here. The diary was found by the police team probing her death during a search of the cabinet she was sharing with Julio Lobo in Siolim village.
The final page of the diary shows a wiry figure hanging from the gallows. Underneath is Julio’s name, address and phone number. Julio was dating Scarlette at the time she died. Though police claim he was not involved in the murder, diary entries of the 15-year-old paint a different picture.
A few weeks before she came India, Scarlette wrote she did not want to come to India but had no choice. She does not say why she had no choice. The relevant diary entry reads, “I am going to India soon, no one wants me to go, but I have no choice, so I’m tryin to spend as much time as I can with my mates and Jordi. He said he will wait for me if I wait for him.”
Scarlette was dating Jordi while in England. Her diary entries show she loved Jordi very much but had cheated him in the past and did not know if she would be faithful to him while in India. The fact that she got stressed without sex was also on her mind. The relevant diary entry reads, “I went to a party lst night, got drunk, stoned and was trippin on mushies. Im goin to wait for jordi But I went 2 days without sex the other day and I started getting stressy so I dunno what Im gonna be like after six months.”
Ten days before she died, Scarlette wrote she was stuck in India. She also mentioned her meeting with Julio, a Goan in his late twenties, and mentioned her sexual encounters with him. The diary entry reads, “Dear diary, I have been in India now for two months and I have seen and experienced so much, But I’m stuk…
“At the full moon party I met this guy Julio, I was pretty messed up like I had taken a pill and drunk a lot of vodka, I don’t remember a lot but apparently we had sex and I can remember that much but it look like two weeks before me and Julio were hanging out regularly… we rode elephants, been jet skiing, seen dolphins and crocks, went deep sea snorkeling.”
Her trips to see dolphins adventure sport were funded by Julio and in an undated entry a few days later, Scarlette talks of her love for her boyfriend in England and her doubts about Julio. “I still think of Jordi all the time and miss him everyday, but when Julio came along and is taking me to Finland and has done so much for me and my family but sometimes I just think he’s using me. He says he loves me but I don’t think so. Its like he feels sorry for me coz I live in a field then I don’t know what to dooo. I WANT to go home:( and he always talks about what happened between him and some other girls. WTF, realy don’t get him. Then he treats me like I am only ith him for his money or sex and try bribing me with partys and stuff and its so messed up. I still love Jordy and I still would prfer to be in Jordi’s company. BUT I M STUK :(”
In her penultimate entry, Scarlette wrote: “I want to go home,” and in a later writing, she clearly felt she was facing a major decision in her life and, used a phrase that seems ironic: “I wish something big would happen to make my decision final.”
She signed some entries with her nickname, Skaz, and there are pages of childish drawings; a heart, two saxophones and unhappy cartoon faces, one of which has tears gushing from its eyes.
