It will also rethink its industrialisation policy, focus on Left unity after poll debacle

KOLKATA: The bitter pill of West Bengal panchayat poll disaster has finally prompted CPI(M) to tame  the Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee-led state government in its approach on the “land acquisition for industry” issue.

After a two-day meeting to review the preliminary reasons behind the debacle, the CPI(M) state committee unanimously agreed that the land issue has backfired for the party in several belts and hence there is an urgent need to be more cautious about it in future.
At the end of the two-day meet here on Monday, CPI(M) politburo member and the party’s state secretary in West Bengal, Biman Bose said that the opposition has been successful in misleading people on the land issue. While reiterating the state government will go ahead with its policy on industrialisation, Bose added that in future the state government will act as per the opinion of the people concerned.

“The government will bring pace in its work only through developing constant interaction with the public in general,” Bose said. He also said that there was further scope for discussion on the state government’s industrial policy.

According to Bose, the state committee is also of the opinion that the party failed in properly countering the opposition’s propaganda against the state government’s industrial initiatives. “We have also failed in projecting the right picture against the false propaganda initiated by the opposition,” Bose said.

Bose also admitted that there had been some defects in involving the people in general when it came to the running of panchayats. “There had been some weaknesses on our part as regards to the organisational network and public relations. Above all, the overall disunity in the Left Front also had its adverse effect,” he said.

At the same time, Bose said that there were behavioural lapses among a section of the party workers and leaders which had also been an important reason for the disaster. “There is no reason to think that we do not have anything to learn from the public. There should not be any feeling of pride,” Bose said.

Bose further said that the state committee has also asked their district committees to go for a detailed introspection to identify the weaknesses and reasons that led to the poll disaster. “The district committees have been asked to submit their report by the first week of July,” he said.
