NEW DELHI: Commuters travelling to Rajasthan had a tough time as train and bus services to the state were severely affected because of the ongoing violent agitation by the Gujjar community who are demanding Scheduled Tribe status.

Northern Railway cancelled nine trains on Monday passing through Rajasthan and diverted several others to different routes.

Rail traffic in Rajasthan was badly affected for the third consecutive day, with nine trains, mostly originating from Delhi being cancelled in the interest of passenger safety, a Railway official said.

Keeping in mind the safety of passengers, bus services from Delhi to various destinations in Rajasthan, including Alwar, Tijara, Jhunjhunu, Sikara, Karawali and Bala Ji have been put on hold, Chief Manager, Rajasthan Roadways, Harish
Goswami said here.

About 20 buses each ply on Delhi-Alwar and Delhi-Tijara routes, while ten buses run from Delhi to Karawali and other agitation-hit areas on a daily basis, he said.

"We will not take any chances as the agitation caused largescale damage to the state-run buses in the first three days of the agitation," Goswami said.

However bus services between Delhi and Jaipur are functioning normally and on time, Goswami said, adding some extra buses are being run on this route to cater to the additional passengers.

Services to Bharatpur, another agitation-hit area, have been resumed by diverting the route through Mathura.

"The situation has not improved. Railways' properties have been damaged at several places. Until calm is restored, it will not be possible to operate railway services in certain areas of Rajasthan," a senior Railway official said.

Rail movement in other zones were also badly affected by the agitation with several trains being diverted to other routes.
