Go down tamely to top seed Egypt

CHENNAI: Amr Shabana is an effervescent person. The three-times world champion was in his element as he powered top seeds Egypt to a convincing 3-0 victory over hosts India in the quarterfinals of the 21st ICL World Men’s Team Squash Championship.

The 28-year-old was flying as he disposed of Indian No 1 Saurav Ghosal 11-5 11-8 11-9. The Cairo native was a tour de force from the front wall as he struck volleys and drops with will.

Ghosal did make manage to make a match of the third set, and occasionally befuddled the Egyptian with stunning winners. However, the world champion had enough weapons in his arsenal to quell the Indian’s challenge.

Earlier, Ritwik Bhattacharya lost 0-3 to Wael El Hindi, while in the third rubber Siddharth Suchde went down to Mohammed Abbas 0-2.

Result: Egypt bt India 3-0 (Wael El Hindi bt Ritwik Bhattacharya13-11 11-4 11-8; Amr Shabana bt Saurav Ghosal 11-5 11-8 11-9; Mohammed Abbas bt Siddharth Suchde 11-6 11-8)
