NEW DELHI: The country is set to have its seventh Indian Institute of Management (IIM) at Shillong, in addition to the existing ones at at Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Kolkata, Lucknow, Indore and Kozhikode.
Human Resource Development Minister Arjun Singh will lay the foundation stone of the new IIM, which would be titled Rajiv Gandhi Indian Institute of Management (RG-IIM) on Saturday.
"The Government of Meghalaya has provided land of about 120 acres, free of cost for permanent campus of RG-IIM at Shillong," IIM-A said in a statement.
Till a permanent campus is constructed, the institute would function from a temporary accommodation at Mayurbhanj Palace, which has been renovated by the state government for the purpose, IIM-A said.
RG-IIM Shillong plans to offer three courses - Post-graduate Diploma in Business Management (PGDBM), Fellowship Programme in Management (FPM) and Management Development Programmes (MDPs).
The PGDBM programme would commence from the academic session 2008-09 with an annual student intake of 60 in the first year. This will be subsequently increased up to 120 in the third year and 180 in the sixth year of the institute's operation.
Apart from these three programmes, RG-IIM also plans to introduce courses on tourism, hospitality, teleservices, information systems, technology, horticulture, hydel power management to name a few.
Pricewaterhouse Cooper India Chairman Rathindra Nath Datta has been appointed the Chairman of the Board of Governors of the new management school at Shillong.
While the director is yet to be appointed, Ashok Kumar Dutta, Director of Indian Institute of Social Welfare and Business Management, Kolkata is the frontrunner for the position.
Meghalaya Chief Minister D D Lapan and Tribal Affairs Minister P R Kyndiah are expected to be present at the ground-breaking ceremony at Shillong.
