Now, every single one of them will investigate crime

MUMBAI: Now, every cop serving in the north region of Mumbai police will get to investigate crime—from petty, routine ones to gruesome, complicated cases.

Earlier, only a few had the prerogative of probing crime, while the rest were given the mundane office work of keeping diaries, registering firearms, etc.

The change has been brought about by additional commissioner of police, (north region), Suresh Khopde, who has decided to actively involve every policeman, regardless of rank, in cracking cases.

“If a policeman has to grow, he has to get a chance to probe crimes,” Khopde told DNA. He added that all 14 police stations in the region were implementing the new initiative.

Every police station has more than 125 policemen, he said. But of them, around 25 were involved in investigations. He cited Samta Nagar as an example.

Of the 155 constables and head constables, 21 sub inspectors and assistant inspectors, a senior inspector and four inspectors, only 30-odd had been involved in jurisdiction.

Henceforth, each of them would be handling cases falling under his or her jurisdiction.

“Territorial responsibility boosts a cop’s confidence. We are trying to work on this
aspect,” said Khopde.
