MSRDC told to employ single agency for bridge, road works

Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh has instructed Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) to expedite the launch of the much-awaited and much-hyped first access controlled city expressway that will begin at Sion and end at Panvel, where the Mumbai-Pune expressway starts.

Deshmukh also asked the MSRDC to refrain from engaging two separate agencies for bridge and road works to avoid a clash of interest.

In a meeting on Tuesday, Deshmukh reviewed the various projects to be undertaken by the MSRDC, the first public undertaking launched for infrastructure projects during the Shiv Sena-BJP government.

It was during a presentation made by Maharashtra Public Works Department (Public Undertakings) Anil Deshmukh that Deshmukh intervened and suggested that the MSRDC better engage a single agency for both bridge and road projects.

MSRDC officials also pointed out that while the Mumbai-Pune expressway had reduced the time to cover over 150km distance between Kalamboli to Pune to two-and-a-half hours, lack of improved road between Sion and Panvel (a distance of 25km) took nearly the same time.

“Because as many as 1,50,000 passenger car units (PSUs) ply on this six lane road,” MSRDC officials pointed out.

Scope of the access controlled city expressway involves six crucial features, namely a) building of a 14-lane road between Kalamboli and BARC, b) construction of six-lane flyover at Uran, Kamothe and Sanpada junctions, c) parallel flyovers at Chembur-Mankhurd and Taloja junctions, d) widening (up to 60 ft) and regarding of road near Devi saddle, e) construction of eight subways and f) electrification of pavements and beautification of roadside among other things.
