DURBAN: England kept their World Twenty20 hopes alive with a good bowling performance in a Super Eights match against New Zealand at Kingsmead on Tuesday despite some big hitting by Scott Styris and Craig McMillan.

New Zealand made 164 for nine after being sent in.

New Zealand were in deep trouble at 40 for four after nine overs before Styris (42) and McMillan (57) went on a six-hitting blitz.

Styris hit four sixes in an innings of 42 off 31 balls, three of his sixes coming off successive balls from Dimitri Mascarenhas.

McMillan also hit four sixes in making 57 off 31 balls.

The recalled Darren Maddy brought England back into the game with a direct-hit run-out of Styris from deep midwicket, which he followed by dismissing McMillan and Jacob Oram in his only over of medium-pace bowling.

England's pace bowlers, James Anderson, Stuart Broad and Andrew Flintoff, exploited early life in the pitch before Styris and McMillan came together in a fifth wicket stand of 60 off seven overs.

McMillan and Oram added another 43 for the sixth wicket but the New Zealand tailenders then struggled against disciplined bowling.

England:
Darren Maddy, Vikram Solanki, Kevin Pietersen, Paul Collingwood (captain), Owais Shah, Andrew Flintoff, Luke Wright, Dimitri Mascarenhas, Chris Schofield, Stuart Broad, James Anderson.

New Zealand:
Brendon McCullum, Lou Vincent, Peter Fulton, Ross Taylor, Scott Styris, Craig McMilan, Jacob Oram, Daniel Vettori (captain), Shane Bond, Mark Gillespie, Chris Martin.
