Accused sank Rs15 lakh earnings from theft in online lottery

For him, it had been easy come and easy go. Shafiq Abdul Shaikh alias Abbu alias Shamim, 25, a plumber by profession, lost more than Rs 15 lakh, playing online lottery. However, it was not hard-earned money that went down the drain. He has been put behind bars for numerous theft charges against his name.

Police said that using his skills as plumber, Shamim used to climb drainage pipes of highrise buildings and enter apartments through bathroom windows. He would rob valuables from the house and take the booty to an instant lottery vendor. He used to pledge the valuables in exchange for playing lottery, hoping to hit the jackpot. “Shamim pledged valuables worth more than Rs 15 lakh to the lottery shopkeeper and lost all of it,” said Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Rakesh Maria.

Earlier, Shamim had been jailed for three years in a robbery case. He was released in August last year, and began robbing houses in the western suburbs. His luck ran out when an informer tipped off police about him. “An police informer got in touch with the lottery vendor and came to know about Shamim. He tipped us off and we quickly nabbed Shamim. We will also take action against the lottery vendor for accepting stolen goods, as well as those who bought the goods from the vendor,” said Maria.

Based on information given by Shamim, police have so far recovered of 56 cellphones, 8 laptops, 8 car tapes and speaker, one I-pod, 14 wrist watches, 31 pieces of silver utensils, 71 pieces of gold and diamond jewellery, $400 in cash and 10 digital cameras. Investigations revealed that Shamim committed at least 23 night break-ins, of which 13 had been detected.

“Had it not been for his vice of playing lottery, Shamim would not have been caught,” said an officer.
