CHENNAI: The GRT Hotels and Resorts chain is planning to build a four-star hotel each in Coimbatore and Hyderabad.
GRT Hotels is part of the jewellery retail store G.R. Thangamaligai in Chennai. It has submitted hotel building plans to the concerned municipal authorities for approval.
The company operates under three brands - GRT Grand (four-star hotels), GRT Regency (three-star), Radisson GRT (five-star). It also owns the luxury beach resort GRT Temple Bay at Mahabalipuram near Chennai.
"The two proposed hotels will be under GRT Grand brand. The Coimbatore hotel will mainly cater to business travellers while the Hyderabad hotel will target a mix of businessmen and tourists," M.O. Koshy, executive director (business development) of GRT Hotels, told.
The 168-room hotel in Coimbatore will come up on a two-acre plot on Avinashi Road. Designed by Canadian architect Arup Datta, the hotel will be eco-friendly by using energy and water efficiently.
Malaysian architectural firm SAA Architects has designed the proposed hotel in Hyderabad, which will have 200 rooms built on a 1.68-acre plot. The hotel's façade and interiors will reflect a mix of the city's cultural heritage and modern times.
Koshy said that GRT Hotels is looking for opportunities to open hotels in Bangalore and Visakhapatnam while expanding its existing properties in Chennai, Kanchipuram and Madurai.
According to him, 68 rooms will be added to the five-star Radisson GRT near Chennai airport and more cottages will be built at the GRT Temple Bay beach resort.
Similarly, expansions are also planned at Madurai and Kanchipuram, where the company operates hotels under the GRT Regency brand.
GRT Hotels has also decided to build a serviced apartment complex in Chennai and a college near the city, which would offer an MBA degree in hospitality management.
