The Bombay University and College Teachers’ Union (BUCTU) has now appealed to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to address the failure of government authorities in taking action against Vice-Chancellor Vijay Khole. The Prime Minister will be arriving at Mumbai for the closing ceremony of University’s sesqui-centennial celebration.

In the letter sent to the Prime Minister, BUCTU has accused Khole of keeping the teaching community away from the governance of University.

“The government-appointed Pratima Oomerji inquiry constituted in 2006 to inquire into the alleged deliberate manipulation of the electoral rolls in the University Senate elections has found both the Registrar and Vice-Chancellor guilty,” said Tapati Mukhopadhyay, General Secretary, BUCTU.

Stating that the one-man panel had submitted its report to the University Chancellor and Governor SM Krishna, she added, “Although we are happy about the action against Jayant Dighe, there is still none taken against the main culprit, the Vice-Chancellor.

We would like to bring his misdemeanour to Dr Manmohan Singh’s notice. We will decide on further actions after conferring with the PM.”

Mukhopadhyay further accused Khole of closing the sesqui-centennial celebrations a month earlier to keep the teaching community at a safe distance, “The 150th year ends on July 17, 2007, but Khole has proceeded to hold it on June 22 in order to keep the teaching community away. Moreover, none of the university teachers have received invites for the closing ceremony,” she alleged.

Even the newly-appointed Registrar Dr Venkataramani, Principal of Somaiya College, has not augured well with BUCTU.  Alleging that Venkataramani’s appointment too was flawed, BUCTU joint secretary Madhu Paranjpe said, “Khole had appointed Venkataramani as the Registrar in an emergency meeting of the management council.

Moreover, the principal’s appointment as Registrar means that he would spend his mornings in his college and then come to the University for the Registrar job.”

Stating that the University needed a full-time registrar to oversee important matters, Paranjpe said, “The deputy Registrar should’ve taken over as the Registrar. When contacted, Khole refused comment.
