MUMBAI: Maharashtra Government has given Tata Power and other power utilities supplying electricity to Mumbai time till April nine for procuring electricity to meet the shortfall in the country's commercial capital.

State Government officials held extensive talks with Tata Power, Reliance Energy and BEST, the power suppliers in Mumbai to discuss the steps taken by them to meet the deficit of 400 mw for Mumbai city and suburbs.

According to Tata Power sources, the company has purchased 60 mw from Jojobera (Jharkhand), 50 mw from Lanco, 50 mw from Adani and another 50 mw from captive power plants in other states.

''We have managed to get additional 50 mw till last night. The shortfall has been brought down to 150 mw and efforts are on to try for more,'' sources informed.

On Sunday, the State Government had given an ultimatum of 48 hours to the companies to look for alternate arrangement to procure power electricity to Mumbai. The Government's decision came in the wake of Tata Power drawing more power from the state's grid.

Tata Power Managing Director Prasad Menon, while talking to reporters earlier this week, called the ultimatum 'self-defeating' and added that it had hampered his company's efforts to enter deals with power generation units elsewhere in the country due to increase in the rates.

He also announced that Mumbai may have to face load shedding of one to two hours daily to meet the shortfall.

Energy Minister Dilip Valse-Patil is expected to make a statement on the power situation in Mumbai in the Legislative Council Later in the day.
