Tata, Reliance to arrange power to meet demand in Mumbai

MUMBAI: The Maharashtra government on Sunday asked Tata Power Company and Reliance Energy Limited, which supply power to the state capital, to arrange additional supplies to overcome a demand-supply gap in the city and its suburbs.

At an emergency meeting here, Principal Secretary (Energy) Rahul Asthana asked the utilities to arrange power to bridge the gap and to submit their plans to the government by Wednesday.

As the mercury soars, the demand-supply gap in the city is going up everyday. During peak hours, it goes up to 150 MW -200 MW. Tata Power, the bulk supplier to the city, has been drawing from the grid to meet demand and this worsens the power situation of the state further.

TPC and REL supply 1,770 MW and 500 MW of power to the city respectively.

The meeting deliberated on the supply-demand mismatch, efforts that could be made to get additional power and to curtail demand, a source present at the meeting said.

Apart from Subrata Rotho, MD of MSEB Holding Company, Mahavitaran MD Ajay Bhusan Pandey, Mahagenco MD Ajay Mehta, BEST MD Uttam Khobragode, and representatives of Tata Power and Reliance Energy attended the meeting.

Maharashtra is facing a power shortage of around 4,500 MW, causing some parts of the state to go without power for up to 14 hours.
