BAGHDAD: At least 31 people were killed and dozens wounded on Saturday when two barrels laden with explosives were set off at a service station in Baghdad's Shiite stronghold of Sadr City, police said.

Iraqi security officials had earlier believed the blast was caused by a car bomb.

"The explosives were set off as people gathered to buy fuel from a petrol tanker which was standing at the service station," a police officer said.

The attack comes as Sunnis began observing the fasting month of Ramadan.

At least 34 people were injured in the blast, the officer added.

The Islamic fasting month of Ramadan, which begins Sunday for Shiites, has been characterized by a spike of violence in Iraq in the past few years.
