MUMBAI: In March 1993, when Chhaya Shahnawaz Qureshi gave birth to son, Faizal, her husband Shanawaz was arrested by the Mumbai police for being involved in the ‘93 serial bomb blasts case.

“On Saturday, when I visited my husband in jail he would not speak to me and only cried saying nothing could save him now. I told him that ‘Allah’ and ‘Ishwar’ would help him,” says Chhaya, who lost her father-in-law Abdul Quadir three months ago. Chhaya now awaits the sentence by the special Tada court.

Her son Faisal is 13 years old and studies in the ninth standard.

“He is being brought up by my husband’s sister in Govandi. After my husband was arrested, my only source of income was the rent I received from another house we owned in Nargis Dutt residential colony. Nowadays, I keep unwell myself,” she said.

Local residents like Maulana Mohammad Yusuf and Rukhmini Baban Jadhav feel Qureshi has been implicated for no fault of his.
