MELBOURNE: Australia have targeted England's rising spin star Monty Panesar for an Ashes ambush later this year, says skipper Ricky Ponting.
Ponting said his batsmen would be "really aggressive" against the tweaker, the first Sikh to play for England, to prevent him from making an early impact in the series.
"We will try to make some sort of impact on him early on," Ponting told the Herald Sun.
"Hopefully, it's a positive one and we won't let him get on top of us. The left-handers, especially Justin (Langer) and Matty (Hayden), the way they play spinners is generally aggressive.
"He could be bowling on a wicket that offers him a little bit or at a time where we are under a little bit of pressure and have to get through it, but at different times I am sure the guys will be really aggressive against him," Ponting said.
Drawing a comparison between Panesar and his senior spinning teammate Ashley Giles, the Australian said the Sikh was a more lethal bowler.
"He is probably a more aggressive, a more attacking bowler than Giles was for them," Ponting said.
"Giles played his role well and did the job the team required of him. But it looks like this guy can actually do both. He can keep it reasonably tight if needed. When it starts to turn a bit more, he can bowl some pretty handy deliveries as well."
