AHMEDABAD: If indications are to be believed, the Bharatiya Janata Party is clearly presenting Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi as its new 'face' against terrorism and hinting at a much bigger role for Modi in national politics in the days to come.
Interestingly, it's Modi who will be addressing a rally on Monday evening at Shanmukhanand Hall in Mumbai during a programme organised by the Maharashtra BJP to observe 'anti-terrorism day', while party president Rajnath Singh will address a similar but low-profile programme in Nagpur.
"LK Advani has been in Ahmedabad twice this week for different programmes. But discussions held by him with party cadres here clearly indicate that Modi, who has successfully wiped out opposition within the party, is the BJP's best bet for leadership. He might have been accused of many things, particularly after 2002 riots, but it has in fact helped him emerge as a strong contender for the party's top slot," observes a veteran leader. He adds, "With increasing terrorism, the party will need a strong 'Hindutva' leader. Who could be a better option than Modi?
That's why in Mumbai's function, which is very important for the party, it's Modi who will be representing the party. Singh is being sent to a much low profile Nagpur programme." Another party leader, perceived close to Modi, indicates, "We believe there is no option for the party but to identify more with the Hindutva ideology. Who else can send a clearer message than Modi, that the party is once again strengthening its Hindutva image? Besides, Bal Thackeray is a known Modi supporter, which will make it easy for the party."
