Two city scientists to get HK Firodia excellence awards

Renowned mathematician MS Narasimhan and experimental physicist  Dipankar Das Sarma have been selected for the HK Firodia Awards for Excellence 2013. Scientist Raghunath Mashelkar and industrialist Arun Firodia announced the awards on Wednesday.

“We have entered the 18th year of presenting the awards that is given to outstanding Indian scientists for their original and world class contributions to any branch of science. The first Firodia award was given to former President APJ Abdul Kalam in 1996. MS Swaminathan, R Chidambaram, Anil Kakodkar and Jayant Narlikar are some of the past recipients of the award,” said Mashelkar.

Indian chemical engineer Man Mohan Sharma will be the chief guest at the award ceremony that will be held at Balgandharva Rangmandir on November 27.

“The award winners will speak on the subject of their interest and a short film on their life will be screened on the occasion,” he said. Narasimhan is a honorary fellow of the Royal Society, London while Sarma is the honorary fellow of the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. Narasimhan will be awarded with Rs2 lakh, a trophy and a citation. Sarma will be presented Rs1 lakh, a trophy and a citation.
