Senior citizen strangulates himself at city hospital

Pune: An elderly person committed suicide on Friday night by strangulating himself with a rope tied to a window grill at DY Patil Hospital, Pimpri, where he was admitted for a cataract surgery. The hospital has registered a case with the Pimpri police station in this regard.
The deceased, identified as Kallappa Dingappa (60), was admitted to DY Patil Hospital on May 12. He underwent a successful cataract surgery on Thursday and was recovering quickly. He was supposed to be discharged on Saturday.
A senior official at D.Y. Patil hospital said Dingappa was a friendly person and mingled well with other patients and hospital staff. He showed no symptoms of depression or stress.
The incident occurred between 10.30 and 10.45 on Friday night. Dingappa went into the treatment room about 10 p.m which adjoins the patients' room. He tied a rope to the window grill and killed himself. Dr Pawar said, "Dingappa was on oral antibiotics. But the antibiotics cannot affect anyone's state of mind."
Dingappa's family visited him during the daytime but nobody was present around him when the incident occurred.
