After the recent incident of molestation of two minor girls, aged 5 and 6 years, in a lift by a pizza delivery boy, the safety issues concerning housing societies have again come to the limelight. While residents demand more stringent security measures, they also complain that precautions are taken only after such incidents happen.

Speaking with iamin, Anita Kodkany, resident, Oxford Premium, Wanowrie, says, "We do have CCTV cameras, but after the incident we are planning to install monitors on the floors for everyone to keep a watch. Also, we do have guest entries. As far as delivery and courier boys are concerned, we will not allow them to be in the premises for more than a few minutes."

"We cannot always blame the watchman for letting in a person. We need to set strict rules and tell the watchman to ensure that rules are followed by all," said Kodkany.

Satish Vaidya, resident of State Bank Nagar Colony, Karve Nagar, talking with iamin says, "We must try to stop delivery men from entering the premises. Instead the watchman could call the person whose parcel has come and they can go to collect it. But not every member would be okay with this system; we have become lazy and need everything at our doorstep. In this case, CCTV cameras are the only best security measures that everyone should adopt."

Some smaller residential societies, especially in the outskirts, do not have a CCTV camera setup. "There are no cameras installed in our society. But after the incident, I am worried because it is just the two of us who live here and it is a little risky. The flat members should come together and beef up the security system," added Priya Krishna, resident of a society on NIBM road.

On Saturday, May 16, a pizza delivery boy from Dominoz, allegedly molested two minors in the lift he took to deliver an order to a residential society. He allegedly started touching the girls inappropriately in the lift and kept the lift running for a long time.

The scared girls went to their father afterwards and reported the incident of a 'pizza uncle' harassing them. "The parents went to the Dominoz outlet where the girls immediately recognised Shinde. The parents lodged a complaint against him and he was taken in police custody," said senior inspector Saifan Mujawar, Sangvi police station.

Shinde has been charged under section 354 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and sections 3, 4, 5 and 8 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act.
