Pune again ranked first in the state by disposing off largest number of cases at the Maha Lok Adalat held on Sunday. As many as 34,010 cases were disposed off at post and pre-litigation stages by 90 members of the Lok Adalat panels.

However, the number of disposed off cases has gone down compared to the Maha Lok Adalat held in March last year wherein 64,000 cases were settled.

Nagpur, with 26,000 cases settled, stood at second place, followed by Thane (15,000 cases) and Mumbai (7,000 cases). The Maha Lok Adalat, held at the district court, was to address 1.13 lakh cases.

City lawyer Dipak Laddha inaugurated the Maha Lok Adalat. He had alleged last year that he was compelled to attend a case in the Lok Adalat by a traffic policeman even though he was willing to pay a fine for having tinted glasses in his car. Laddha had also filed a Public Interest Litigation in this regard. This prompted the Pune District Legal Services Authority (PDLSA) not to address 5,000 cases of traffic rule violations at the Lok Adalat last year.

Principle district and sessions judge Anant Badar inaugurated the video-conferencing facility between the judicial magistrate first class court, Cantonment, and Yerawada jail.

“This facility will reduce the workload of the police and help clear pending court cases. We will fix a day to conduct a hearing of cases via video-conferencing every week,” Badar said.

Later in the evening, RK Malabade, secretary of PDLSA, said, “There were 90 pan   els which presided over the Maha Lok Adalat and we successfully resolved about 34,010 cases. This is the highest number of cases disposed off in a single district in Maharashtra. This time, we had 20,409 post-litigation cases out of which 11,846 were settled. There were 91,887 pre-litigation cases and 22,163 were disposed off.”

Advocate Ganesh Kawade, president of Pune Family Court Lawyers’ Association, said, “A total of 276 cases were on board of Lok Adalat of which 63 cases got settled. The settled stories included divorce petitions of 16 couples. Besides, 10 couples had applied for restitution of conjugal rights.”

Lawyer Atul Gunjal, pleading on behalf of Maharastra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC), said, “A total of 299 cases of Motor Accident Claims Tribunal (MACT) were on schedule and 101 of them were disposed off. The total amount of compensation to litigants ran into Rs4.21 crore. The scheduled cases included 22 accidents involving MSRTC buses accidents of which 16 were settled. The MSRTC paid compensation up to Rs59.75 lakh to the litigants.”
