A habit formed to pass time in the absence of an alternate means of entertainment proved costly for Yerawada jail inmate Amit Bharatlal Yadav, who was found with 40 gram ganja inside the jail premises. His interrogation revealed that he had formed a group of inmates who smoked chillum to kill time in the jail.

The fact came to light when Yadav returned to jail from a court hearing on June 4. While entering the jail, a vigilant staffer Sanjay Hegde noticed something shiny on his slipper and asked Yadav to remove his slipper at the gate. Hegde then tore opened the soul of the slipper and found ganja in it.

“After the incident we interrogated Yadav and found that he had formed a group of jail inmates. They used to smoke ganja after lights out in the night. We want to find out how many times he had smuggled ganja and see how long they were able to dodge jail officials,” assistant police inspector Shivaji Bendre of Jail Road police chowky told dna. Bendre said that the court had allowed to take Yadav into police custody. “We will get his custody in a couple of days and interrogate him further in this regard,” Bendre added.

The modus operandi employed to smuggle ganja inside jail premises was interesting. Bendre said when police interrogated Yadav after the revelation, they came to know that Yadav’s friend who was recently bailed out, planned the smuggle for Yadav.
He came to the court on Yadav’s appearance in Shivaji Nagar court. He replaced Yadav’s shoes with a slipper. He had hidden 40 gram ganja in the slipper’s sole. After the hearing, Yadav wore the slipper and returned to jail with ganja pouch slipped in it.
