The political turmoil in the state is an outcome of coalition conflict. Chief minister Prithviraj Chavan and Ajit Pawar, who on Tuesday resigned as the deputy chief minister, have always failed to work as a team.

The developments after Pawar stepped down do not auger well for either the Congress or the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and are bound to raise questions which their respective high commands will find hard to answer in the coming days.

Sensing this, NCP president Sharad Pawar rushed to Mumbai from Delhi late on Tuesday to salvage the situation.

Nawab Mullick, chief spokesperson of the NCP, said, “A meeting of the NCP legislature will be convened on Wednesday. A formal decision on all related developments will be discussed.”

However, till late night, Ajit maintained that he was in no mind to withdraw my resignation

While all 20 state NCP ministers stood by him by offering their resignations to state party state chief Madhukar Picchad, the CM had no similar adequate support from the Congress.

NCP sources indicated that Ajit’s resignation was a well thought out move. “He took an independent decision to resign. He had been missing from all important meetings in the past week. He was restless as he perceived the charges levelled against him in a series of scams as the handiwork of some insiders in the NCP who backed the Congress to corner him in state politics.”

In the NCP, it is well-known that old hands who are loyal to Sharad Pawar have always trained their guns on Ajit, whom they perceive as a political threat. Moreover, Ajit’s style of work does not suit many old leaders. Ajit, who has always strived for a free hand in state politics, has often found himself pitted against hurdles from seniors, who seek recourse to Sharad Pawar.

In the coming days, Sharad Pawar will have to set the NCP house in order to streamline the power tussle among the old and young turks. Another issue relates to the working equations between NCP ministers and the Congress’ chief minister.

In the past, the NCP has lodged complaints about Chavan with party president Sonia Gandhi. Chavan’s high moral standing as ‘Mr Clean’ is often perceived as a weapon used by the Congress to undermine the NCP’s electoral growth in Maharashtra.

On his part, Chavan will have to go the extra mile to mend fences with political rivals within the Congress.
