After the Maharashtra government, it is the turn of students to challenge the National Eligibility-cum- Entrance Test (NEET) which is to be conducted by the Medical Council of India (MCI) on may 12, 2012, before the Bombay High Court.

A petition is filed by Anagad Ranadiv challenging the NEET for all medical colleges, government, private and deemed universities across India for admission to undergraduate admission to medical courses.

The all India common entrance examination will be based on the Core syllabus which is prepared based on syllabi of CBSE, NCERT and COBOS.

The petition challenges legality, validity and propriety of the notification issued on December 12, 2010, and gazette of December 27, 2010, whereby regulations are amended by MCI to introduce single NEET for admission to medical courses from academic year 2012-13.

“The NEET-UG decision is taken undue haste and fraught with serious consequences jeopardising academic careers of thousands of students in general and of the state of Maharashtra in particular,” adds the petition seeking stay on the NEET.

In July, the MCI declared provisional syllabus and called for objections and suggestions from public. “Over 1,900 persons recorded their objections with MCI… Ignoring the objections, the MCI proceeded to publish final syllabus for NEET-UG i.e. Core Syllabus,” states the petition.

The MCI claimed that they have recommended syllabus of NEET-UG after review of various syllabi as well as those prepared by CBSE, NCERT and COBOS with the intention to establish uniformity.

Two education experts have said that NEET-UG is content wise 216% heavier than MH-CET (common entrance examination for Maharashtra) and also includes topics of HSC board which have not all been studied upto Class 12, adds the petition.

The petition questions as to which text books the HSC students of Maharashtra should study from and as to sufficient text books were available in market.

The students have been studying the HSC syllabus since last two years and now all of a sudden the entire syllabus has been changed, said Ashutosh Kumbhkoni, counsel for the students.

Students have claimed that the syllabus of NEET is based on CBSE curriculum which HSC students have not studied at all. The syllabus for NEET is 210% times tougher as per education experts. Also, Madras, AP and Karnataka HCs have already stayed NEET for their respective states. Maharashtra govt too has filed a separate petition seeking stay for NEET in the state.

Maharashtra government has already filed a petition challenging the NEET saying that high courts of other states – AP, Madras and Karanataka – have already stayed the examination for their respective states.
