Activists protesting against the Jaitapur Nuclear Power Project will conduct a special session for Shiv Sena legislators and MPs to educate them about the project so that they are prepared for the forthcoming assembly and parliament sessions respectively.

Though the Sena has been part of the protest, party representatives in the assembly and parliament lack the tact to corner the state government by asking appropriate questions.

To overcome this hurdle, Sena executive president Uddhav Thackeray asked Pravin Gavhankar of the Janhit Seva Samiti and other activists to hold a session with party MLAs and MPs on the technical details of the project and its unresolved issues at the Shiv Sena Bhavan on July 13.

Gavhankar is expected to make a special presentation on the people's movement in Jaitapur, issues raised by villagers related to fishing that have not been addressed by the government and the hazards of the power plant on the environment and population.

He will be accompanied by fishermen from Sakhri Nate and some activists from Pune.

“We discussed the matter with Uddhavji. He told me to come to Sena Bhavan and talk with the elected representatives of his party on these issues. We want justice… we do not belong to any party. If this is going to help to solve our problem, why shouldn't we do it?” said Gavhankar.

“After the session at Shiv Sena Bhavan, we will attend CPI(M) general secretary Prakash Karath's public meeting at Dadar. We will be with those who support our cause.” The activists' first priority is to stop construction of the boundary wall at the project site in Konkan district.

The activists also plan to organise a joint rally of all anti-nuclear power activists in the country in the first week of August at Delhi.
