When Mantralaya, the state government's seat of power, is not safe from fire, forget about other buildings. Though the list of unsafe buildings in the city is huge, there are few buildings, which stand out and are equipped with all the fire safety gears.

Sahar police station near the international airport is a case in point. Constructed by GVK, a private company, the five-storey structure has all the possible fire safety equipment. The fall ceiling, which compliments the impressive interiors of the police station is embedded with smoke sensors, fire alarms, and fire sprinklers. The fire sprinklers release water on sensing fire.

“These fire safety apparatus will get activated in case of a fire and thereby save the building," said senior police inspector Jaiprakash Girham of the Sahar police station. The police station building also has emergency exits and is also equipped with fire distinguishers. The building is less cluttered as there are couples of locker rooms where the documents are stored.

Similarly, while constructing the new building of the Public Work Department (PWD) in Fort, the authorities considered all safety measures. The ground plus seven storey structure was constructed keeping the heritage laws in mind. The building is fitted with automatic smoke and fire detectors, water sprinklers, and hydrants at the periphery of the building, huge windows for better ventilation. The cabins of the employees are spacious. The corridors on third, fifth and seventh floor have space for the people to gather in case of a fire.

“Since there is a heritage building nearby a lot of wood has been used for constructing the corridors, windows and doors. But the wood used are very thick (45mm) and the paint used is fire resistant,” said Bipin Sankhe, chief architect. Sankhe is the one who has designed the building. The PWD has also made a switch over from wooden cupboard to the tough and sturdy iron cupboards.

The municipal ward office of P/South near Goregaon railway station is another public office where proper fire safety mechanism is in place. Each of the floors in the five-storey building is equipped with fire detectors and alarms.
