The 2.5km-Wakdewadi-Sadalbaba Dargah Chowk Link Road has become a dangerous stretch for motorists and two-wheeler riders, as three people were killed in two accidents and two sustained injuries in the recent past.

A 26-year-old person was killed after his motorcycle was hit by a speeding Tempo on Monday morning. The local residents rushed him to a private hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

Premjit Mohan Nayar,  22, of Vishrantwadi was killed on the spot after his motorcycle was hit by a speeding Tempo at Sadalbaba Bridge near Patil Estate slum. The victim had come under the wheels of the Tempo and sustained serious injuries. The arrested Tempo driver has been identified as Baliram Ramdas Kande of Koregaon Bhima.

Despite repeated requests by the city traffic police, the civic body has failed to put in place infrastructure to regulate speed of vehicles on this stretch.

Former deputy commissioner of police (traffic), Manoj Patil, had sent two letters to the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) requesting to set up speed breakers, street lights, traffic signals and road markings on this road.

He had written the first letter 15 days before the road was thrown open for public on February 2, 2011. He had cautioned the civic administration to not allow the movement of vehicles on this road unless proper infrastructure was put in place.

Assistant police inspector Prakash Raskar of Yerawada traffic division told DNA, “We have been asking the PMC to set up median dividers on the stretch, but they built it up for some distance only. Even the roadside parking of vehicles is affecting the traffic in the area.”

According to Raskar, driving on the 100-metre road is a nightmare for motorists. Without speed breakers, street lights on a stretch of the road, and other poor infrastructure, some motorists resort to rash driving.

He said, “What has further compounded the woes of commuters is that inter-city buses are parked on both sides of the road near the Wakdewadi end. Passengers boarding the buses and vehicles parked near the buses complete motorists’ nightmare.”

Raskar said, “The commuters have to face problem especially during the nights, as most of the buses park on the road.”

Assistant engineer Rajendra Medankar of PMC said, “The street lights would be set up shortly. The underground cable and footpath works are already completed.”
