It isn’t unusual for an entertainment show hosted for a charitable cause to overshadow the good intent behind it. Sur Sangeet Sangam, a musical presented by Light of Life Trust and DNA Media Ltd. to raise funds for their rural education initiative, Anando, was a pleasant exception.

The event unfolded at the Nehru Centre Auditorium on Thursday evening to an audience which consisted of familiar faces from the film and music industry, as well as the media. However, the evening stayed true to its heart — transformation in the lives of thousands of children from rural India that the initiative can potentially bring. The trust adopts the ‘Triple E’ approach — educate, empower and employ — and reaches out to 2,700 children in 31 centres across four districts in the state.

It was fitting then for the event to begin with a song performance by a group of school children from Karjat who have directly benefited from the Anando initiative. This was followed by organiser and compeer Bipin Pandit, a professional artist and general manager of the Ad Club, take the audience on a melodious trip down memory lane.

Talented artists from Pandit’s troupe belted out songs of legendary greats of the Hindi film industry, ranging from Rafi, Mukesh, Hemant Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar, Shamshad Begum among others. Each song was preceded by Pandit revealing interesting anecdotes about the singers and composers who have lived on in the timeless music that characterised old Hindi film songs from the ‘50s right down to the early ‘80s. The show also included a special tribute to the great yesteryear actor Shammi Kapoor. As Bipin put it, “He brought a liveliness to the film industry that was incomparable.”

The singers included Rohit Borkar, who delivered a mesmerising performance of the song Omkar Swaroopa, the pretty Mona Kamat who delighted listeners with a faithful rendition of Satyam Shivam Sundaram, and Sameer who won over the audience with O Mere Dil ke Chain from the film Mere Jeevan Saathi. Other artists included Sunil Menon, Anand Bahal, Shraddha Vete, Dinesh Ghate and Pradeep Pandit.

The chief guests were Roopkumar Rathod, the memorable voice behind the title song of the hit film Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, and his wife Sonali.
