More than 10 days after the Mumbai police averted a major rescue and assassination bid inside the sessions court, there are indications that the actual killers may have managed to escape, while the three who were arrested were only supposed to rescue gangster Devendra Jagtap alias JD.

Interrogations and investigations have revealed that the arrested trio has no knowledge about the assassination plot. Reports now indicate that there was a separate gang waiting in the wings to eliminate a 11/7 accused, but, after the police foiled their plan, the gang fled from the court.

One of the three arrested said that Chhota Rajan aide DK Rao was the target, while the other person has said that an accused in the 7/11 serial train blast was the target. The third suspect has said that an advocate was the target. “This indicates they were not aware of the exact target and there must be a separate group of shooters who must have fled the spot after the police foiled their plans,” said an officer on conditions of anonymity.

Sources said that it was probably a ploy used by the Santosh Shetty Syndicate to keep the two groups separate from each other, so that in case of a leak or change in plan, it would not expose the entire plot and all the people involved. “Only one key person who was in direct contact with Shetty knew the target, and who point him out when he would arrive in court,” the source said.

Meanwhile, defence lawyer Rajesh Shrivastava rubbished the claims made by the police and said that the entire case was fabricated. “The arrested people were getting food for JD for every hearing for the past seven to eight months and the country-made revolver was planted on them. The three do not have any criminal background. The police cooked up the story to delay JD’s bail application,” Shrivastava said.

“The SS gang is known to use only sophisticated weapons and not country-made revolvers.”
