While work for the Western Express Highway bridge as well as the Andheri Rail-Over Bridge (RoB) is in progress in full swing, as per the officials of the MMRDA and MMOPL, the deadline for commencement of the 11km metro still remains a stiff target to achieve.
Though work for both the bridges is in full swing, MMRDA is yet to hand over a tiny 100m portion to MMOPL, where not even a single pile has started till date.
In spite of the difficulties, MMOPL director KP Maheshwari is confident of delivering the metro to Mumbaikars by this year end.
“It is a fact that a 100-metre portion in Asalfa is yet to be given to us by the authority. There are some old toilets in this portion which need to be vacated. However, this is a minor impediment and I am confident that it will be sorted out soon,” Maheshwari told DNA.
The top official of Reliance Infrastructure led consortium which will run the first metro for about 30 years once commenced was happy about the progress of the rest of the work.
“We have finished 95% of the piling work. Mumbaikars will see the trial run of their first metro during this monsoon (July) on a 2km patch between Versova and Azad Nagar. The civil works are nearing completion as well,” said Maheshwari.
“The car depot in DN Nagar also is nearing completion with the ramp taking the metro from ground level to the elevated levels is almost ready. We can start the test run as the entire 11-km patch is not needed for trials. The trials on entire patch are known as confirmatory runs and will be done just four to five times before the actual commencement of the corridor,” he added.
