NASHIK: Sanjay Chavan, MLA from Baglan constituency in Nashik, held a fast-unto-death on Thursday at the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Ltd at Nashik Road demanding progress in the work of two sub-stations sanctioned for his constituency.

However, the MLA broke his fast by evening after the higher authorities assured him that the work would start with immediate effect.

Two sub-stations of 33/11kv were sanctioned for Azner Saundane and Askheda in Baglan to meet the electricity needs of the farmers in these areas.

In spite of the inauguration by Energy Minister Dilip Valse Patil in 2005, there was no further progress in the work. The matter was followed up at various levels for 18 months.

The MLA had organised an agitation in Satana in February demanding that the work should be started. He was also assured by the officials about the progress in the work but even after 6 months nothing was done.

Chavan then resorted to the fast. Chavan also demanded three additional sub-stations in Nirpur, Karanjad and Patani areas in Baglan. He opposed the surcharge of Fuel and Oil Cost Adjustment  that comes as additional charge in the electricity bill to the farmers.

After much communication with the higher authorities, tenders worth Rs6.5 crore for the two sanctioned sub-stations were approved.
