MUMBAI: Eleven missing vehicles are giving the police sleepless nights. In July, a total of 15 vehicles were reported stolen from Navi Mumbai. While two of these were probably used in the serial bomb blasts in Ahmedabad on July 26, two others were found laden with explosives and abandoned in Surat the next day. However, there is no trace of the remaining vehicles.

While a white Maruti 800 (MH-05-5764) was found blown up at LG hospital in Ahmedabad on July 26, a white WagonR (MH-06-AF-9719) was found at the blast site in Civil Hospital. The next day, a black WagonR (MH-43-R-3569) and a red-coloured WagonR (MH-06-8294) were found abandoned in Surat. Both the cars were laden with explosives.

All the four cars were stolen from Navi Mumbai on July 7 and July 14. However, it’s the vehicles that were stolen around the same time but haven’t been traced yet that have got the police jittery. “These cars are among those stolen during the same period the four cars traced to Gujarat went missing,” a senior police officer from Navi Mumbai told DNA. The police is working on the theory that the gang that stole the four cars also stole the 11 others.

According to the data available with the police, a brand new Mahindra Bolero, which did not even have a registration number, was stolen from Kalamboli, while three Maruti 800s bearing registration numbers MH-06-AF-8290 (red colour), MH-01-P-1218 (red) and MH-43-S-4826 (black) were stolen from Panvel, Kalamboli and Vashi. Two Maruti Alto cars, bearing registration number  MH-06-AF-7880 (blue) and MH-43-M-7955 (maroon), were stolen from Vashi and Kalamboli.

Two Honda City cars, bearing registration number MH-06-MM-3427 (golden) and MH-02-TC-424, were stolen from Vashi, while two Santro cars, registration number MH-43-B-142 (blue) and MH-01-JP-2214 (blue), were stolen from Vashi and Turbhe areas.

A black coloured Tata Indica (MH-12-CD-6693) was reported stolen from Panvel.
Apart from this, two Bajaj Pulsar motorcycles and a tempo have also been stolen from Navi Mumbai around the same time.

The police have questioned all known car thieves in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai but they haven’t got any leads. Though the police feel it could be the handiwork of a gang which does not have any criminal record in Mumbai or Navi Mumbai, their worst fears are that the cars could have been picked up by terrorists themselves or they could have taken the help of people with no criminal record. What is worrying is the vehicles could now be used for terrorist activity anywhere in the country.

The police officer said the list of the untraced vehicles has been circulated in all police stations in Mumbai, Navi Mumbai and other parts of the state. “We have issued a look-out for the cars in other states as well,” the officer added.
