Actor Madhuri Dixit-Nene’s husband Dr Shriram Nene has finally got permission to practise medicine in Maharashtra. Dr Nene, a cardio-thoracic surgeon, recently registered himself with the Maharashtra Medical Council (MMC), which is mandatory to practise in the state.

The actor shifted to India with her family almost a year ago. Since then Nene has shown his keenness to practise in Mumbai. He was a practising physician in Colorado in the US before relocating to India. On, October 21 last year, DNA had first reported about Dr Nene’s desire to practise in Mumbai.

According to sources, two top hospitals in Bandra and Andheri are vying to rope in Nene in their panel. However, before getting MMC’s permission, Nene visited KEM hospital and expressed his desire to work there. Dr Sanjay Oak, former dean of KEM hospital, said, “Dr Nene met me at KEM hospital and expressed his wish to join us. But he didn’t  have registration from MMC.”

MMC president Dr Kishor Taori said, “Before our council registration Dr Nene got permission from Medical Council of India to practise in the country. After that he applied to our council because he wanted to practise in Maharashtra. He has been given the state council registration and now he can practise here.”

“Every doctor who practises modern medicine in the state has to register himself with the MMC. After he submits an application and his degree-related documents, they are checked by our committee; only then is a doctor allowed to practise in the state.”
