Owing to poor response the city transport utility, Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Ltd (PMPML), on Tuesday decided to shut down the bus service on the Kothrud-Hinjewadi route with immediate effect.

Buses on that route were introduced on a pilot basis by the transport utility in March as it felt that it would benefit commuters, mainly labourers and students.

Sources in the PMPML claimed that the response from the commuters was extremely poor. “We had expected our earnings would be about Rs30 per km. But so far we have earned about Rs9 per km. The route was not generating the revenue that we were expecting,” claimed PMPML sources.

According to the sources, the distance between Kothrud and Hinjewadi is about 27 km and the cost of travelling per head was Rs22. There were 10 trips per day on that route.
