A suspected Pakistani ISI agent who was picked up by the police from his Mazgaon residence on Wednesday, was allegedly speaking to somebody in the neighbouring country over the phone on the night of the Varanasi blast.

Javed Abdul Gaffar Mojawala, 36, has been charged under sections 468 (forgery for the purpose of cheating), 120 (b) (criminal conspiracy) of the IPC and nine sections of the Official Secrets Act 1923.

Mojawala’s phone was put under surveillance after police received specific information that he was working for the Inter Services Intelligence of Pakistan. “On the night of the blast, Mojawala had made several calls to some unknown persons in Pakistan. These people are suspected to be ISI officers,” said a source.

Following this the police kept a watch on him and raided his house in Infinity Towers near the Mazgaon sales tax office. Mojawala was produced before the magistrate on Thursday who remanded him in police custody till December 20.

“We have recovered three passports from his possession; they were issued on different names.  Incriminating documents seized from his residence contained information and maps of some important locations in the city. We suspect that he was planning to pass them on to his ISI mentors,” said the source.

“We suspect that he was in touch with some people in the city who have been working for the ISI. We are also examining whether he had travelled to Pakistan in the past.”

Mojawala’s family has confirmed the arrest. “A few officers from Crawford Market had come to our house and picked up my brother,” said Mojawala’s brother Asif.

Mojawala stays with his grandmother, wife, daughter and brother. According to his neighbours, the family came to the building nearly seven months ago and was staying there on rent. “They hardly speak to anyone in the society,” said a neighbour.
