Even though the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) are behind schedule by two years in procuring 500 buses for the city, the civic body on Tuesday was granted a second tranche by the central government for purchase of buses.

A meeting of central sanctioning and monitoring committee (CSMC) was held in New Delhi on Tuesday under the chairmanship of urban development secretary, Navin Kumar. Rs31 crore was approved for the city for various development projects under the Jawaharlal Nehru national urban renewal
    mission (JNNURM).

According to the PMC, final installments were approved for subways on Baner Road and Ahmednagar Road as well as bus rapid transit system (BRTS) pilot project. Also, a second tranche of Rs16 crore for 500 buses was approved, along with approval of revised detailed project report (DPR).

Municipal commissioner Mahesh Zagade had taken the initiative for getting approval for projects and getting funds. The meeting was attended by Zagade, executive engineer Vinay Deshpande, deputy commissioner Praveen Ashtikar, additional city engineer Shreeniwas Bonala and PMPML chief engineer Sunil Burase.

The Centre had approved 500 buses for PMC in February 2008 under JNNURM and had agreed to provide partial funding. The buses were supposed to be procured for PMPML.

BJP corporator, Vikas Mathkari, told DNA that a total of 650 buses should have been added to the fleet of PMPML considering the funding for both PMC and Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC). But only 166 buses have been procured till date.

He said the civic body was behind schedule by two years for getting buses. Procurement of buses is delayed due to ego clashes between the ruling Congress and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) as well as mistakes by the administration.

When PMPML chief engineer, Burase, was asked when the new buses would be inducted in the fleet of PMPML, he said he is awaiting a revised schedule.
