A major air disaster was averted at the Mumbai airport on Friday, when a Kingfisher Airlines flight was cleared for landing while a Spicejet flight was waiting to take off from the same runway.

The Kingfisher flight aborted landing and did a go around as the pilot of the Chennai-bound Spicejet flight, with 270 passengers on board, detected a snag and informed the air traffic control (ATC), which asked him to wait until help arrived.

“The Spicejet pilot got ATC clearance and positioned himself on the runway. But, as sound alert went off in the cockpit, the pilot decided not to take-off and informed the ATC about it,” said a Mumbai airport official.

By then, however, the Kingfisher flight from Delhi, which was carrying 157 passengers and eight crew members, had been already given landing clearance by the ATC. Realising that Spicejet flight had not yet gone off the runway, the ATC frantically informed the Kingfisher pilot to abort landing and do a go around.

“The Kingfisher flight was higher than the decision-making height and so there was no danger of crash-landing,” the airport official said. The flight finally landed after Spicejet flight vacated the runway and proceeded to the bay.

Kingfisher Airlines spokesperson confirmed the incident and said that the Mumbai ATC requested the captain of their flight to do a go around. “The captain of the flight immediately complied with the instructions of ATC and was re-vectored for a fresh approach. The aircraft landed safely,” he said.

As the Spicejet aircraft had a technical snag, the matter was reported to the directorate general of civil aviation (DGCA). Spicejet spokesperson confirmed the incident and said that their pilot followed all instructions given by the ATC.
